Makalu Base Camp Trekking
Makalu Base Camp Trekking

The uncrowded and low altitude Makalu trek lies in eastern part of Nepal which starts with one hour flight to Tumlingtar or 18 hour bus journey to Hile. This trek visits one of the most remote and unfrequented areas of Nepal. This trek offers virgin wilderness and stunning natural scenery and takes you to Makalu Base Camp (5250 m), now designated as Makalu Barun National Park. The unique landscape of Mt. Makalu shelters some of the last pristine mountain ecosystems on earth. This trek is appropriate to all sorts of travelers having interest on nature.

This incredible biodiversity of this area provides a living laboratory for international scientific research. There are spectacular views of rugged Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Makalu (8463m), fifth highest in the world, Mt. Chamlang (7319 m) and Mt. Baruntse (7129m). Within 40 kms, these high peaks descend to the Arun River at 670m. The Makalu-Barun Valley provides stunning contrasts, craggy rocks rise from lush green forests, and colorful flowers bloom beneath white snow peaks. The main focus point of this trek is Makalu Barun National Park (lies in the Solukhumbhu and Sankhuwasabha district, established in 1992 and formally inaugurated in 1992). Apart from this the dense forest of Rhododendron covering the gorgeous hills of Barun valley, where high waterfalls cascade into deep gorges, alpine meadows & Barun glacier, the tropical Arun valley are the major jewels of this area. Having a wide range of attitudinal and climatic variation the Makalu-Barun trekking offers a remarkable and diverse habitat for a rich variety of flora and fauna.

The trek starts with a flight to Tumlingtar and heads up the Arun River valley to Sedua and Num, then crossing Shipton La Pass (4210 m) into the upper Barun river valley for a close look at Mt. Makalu and Mt. Chamlang. From Num, the trail crisscrosses the Arun and starts up the Kasuwa Khola turning westward to cross the Shipton Pass (4,500m), which actually consists of two passes, Keke La (4,127m) and Tutu La (4,075m) into the upper Barun Khola valley. We pass through the village of Brahman, Chhetri, Rai, Limbu, Gurung and Tamang community with their unique local culture and own mother language, tradition & costume.
